LAKHIMPUR: The Mising community organizations once again unitedly reiterated their demand to grant Constitutional status to the Mising Autonomous Council (MAC) by including the community in the Sixth Schedule. In this regard, the organizations took the crucial decision to launch an agitation in order to convince the Union Government for the same.

The demand was reiterated in the Mising Community Convention held at Gogamukh on Sunday under the auspices of the Mising Bane Kebang in association with almost all Mising community literary, cultural, student and women organizations, like Mising Agom Kebang (MAK), Mising Mimag Kebang (MMK), Mising Dirbi Kebang (MDK), Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), Takam Mising Mime Kebang (TMMK).

Notably, the mega convention was organized in order to discuss the present state of the Mising community and their agitation initiated for attaining constitutional self-governance in reference to the present political situation of the State.

In the event more than 3,000 delegates from 13 districts of the State took part. During the discussion, stress was laid on the Mising community agitation towards establishing their right, achievements and its future.

Regarding the demand, Mising Bane Kebang president Paramananda Chayengia, who is also the Chief Executive Member of MAC, stated, “In the wake of the signing of the Bodo Territorial Region (BTR) Accord, many apprehensions are rising in front of us. Our people have cast lots of questions regarding the result of the agitation we have initiated since a long time to attain the perfect self-governance status, wherever we go. Till the time, we have not thought that any political threat has been standing in front of our community. We need more autonomy to propel the comprehensive development of our community.

“We need constitutional status. If we get the recognition from the Constitution, the Union Government will be compelled to pay due attention to our development. Our community needs more funds to render its academic, cultural, economic and intellectual development.”

He further informed the media that the community convention would also take crucial resolutions with regard to the implementation of the Assam Accord, building a foundation of agro-based economy for the development of the Mising community and retaining the self-identity of the community by following its unique cultural traditions regarding Ali Aye Ligang and other community festivals.

Attending the event, P&RD Minister Naba Kumar Doley declared that the development of the Mising community would be propelled by ushering in its coordination with other castes and communities of the State. On the other hand, Jonai LAC MLA Bhuban Pegu also strongly demanded to include the community in the Sixth Schedule.

He stated that he would not compromise regarding the constitutional safeguard of the indigenous communities of the State for their comprehensive amelioration.

In the convention, the discussion was also held on the recommendation of the decisions of the technical session on the Gogamukh Declaration-2015 regarding cultural reform in Mising community and the economic agenda of Mising community.
