DIBRUGARH: The Department of Anthropology of DHSK College celebrated World Anthropology Day on Thursday which is globally celebrated every year on the third Thursday in the month of February. To mark this occasion an array of programmes were organized by the department.
The day started with lecture programmes, organized in two eminent educational institutions of the town, namely Little Flower Higher Secondary School and Saint Mary's Higher Secondary School Dibrugarh wherein lectures on the topic Anthropology: A Key to Fascination were delivered among the students of higher classes by Dr Bhaskar Das Assistant Professor of the Department of Anthropology, DHSK College along with Post Graduate students of the department Ashtha Borgohain and Habinath Buragohain. The aim of the lectures was to take Anthropology among the school students and to popularize the importance of the discipline among them.
A lecture programme by Dr. Maitreyee Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, Dibrugarh University was conducted. The programme began with a chorus by the students of the Department which was followed by felicitation of the invited guests. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Moromi Talukdar, Associate professor and Head of the Department of Anthropology. The programme was inaugurated by the Principal of DHSK College Dr Sashi Kanta Saikia. Highlighting the importance of the Anthropology discipline, Dr Saikia said that the subject can contribute a lot towards human behaviour and teach how to respect other cultures. Delivering the lecture on the topic 'Stories of Evolution Unfolded by Our Genes', Dr Maitreyee Sharma elaborated how our genes carry valuable information about our past. She highlighted the findings of recent researches in this regard. In the programme, trophies and certificates were also distributed to the winners of the inter college essay writing competition on 'Role of Anthropology in Contemporary World' which was organized to mark this occasion.
Niranjan Borah, Assistant Professor of the Department of Anthropology, NLB City College, Dibrugarh who was one of the judges of the inter college essay writing competition spoke on how students should write an essay. The programme concluded with the inauguration of the Departmental Wall Magazine called 'Inuit' by the Principal Dr Sashi Kanta Saikia.
