DHUBRI: Dhubri-Gauripur are fast emerging as twin cities in lower Assam with all modes of communication—road, rail, river and air.
Talking to The Sentinel, Assam BJP State vice-president, Bimal Oswal said that railway communication had seen a revolutionary change as new railway track was being laid from Gauripur to Abhayapuri. Trial run on newly-laid track up to Bilasipara from Gauripur was conducted by the Railway a couple of months back while Gauripur Railway Station was declared as junction.
“As assured by senior railway officials, Gauripur to Abhayapuri track-laying works will be completed by 2020. Further, works for re-opening of Rupshi Airport are being carried out on a war-footing and it will be opened sometime in September this year. A few months ago Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonwal laid the foundation stone of the Rupshi Airport,” Oswal added.
Oswal said that similarly Dhubri River Port had already become functional and immigration check-point opened. Dhubri-Kachugaon NH Road was being widened and reconstructed to connect the Dhubri-Phulbari Road Bridge, which is just 10 km away from Gauripur, he added.
Oswal said that construction of Dhubri Medical College and Hospital was also going on in the extended and acquired part of land adjacent to Dhubri Civil Hospital and it was likely to be completed by end of 2020.
With all these major developments happening in and around Dhubri and Gauripur, these two towns would virtually emerge as twin cities in the coming few years, Oswal claimed.
Oswal also informed that beside this, the tourism industry was also slowly but steadily taking shape in these two towns as there were many rich historical, heritage and cultural sites, including world famous terracotta of Asharikandi village near Gauripur.
Once all projects get functional, Dhubri will regain its lost glory as a centre of vibrant trade and commerce, which it was prior to the partition of country, Oswal said.
