DHUBRI: Dhubri Police are taking steps to prevent rumours being spread about the 'black men' dacoits. As a result of these rumours, villagers and even people living in urban areas are spending sleepless nights and reportedly guarding their area since the last fortnight.

Police were alerted about this rumour on Monday when a team of police led by Officer-in-charge of Dhubri Police Station, Partha Pratim Gogoi arrested a drug peddler with huge cache of drugs at Jhagrarpar Police checkgate located on the outskirts of Dhubri town. Mistaking the drug peddler for a member of the black men dacoit gang, nearly 200 villagers rushed to the spot and created a chaotic situation.

Dhubri Superintendent of Police Gaurav Abhijit Dilip said that since there was no gang of black men dacoits, it was the duty of police to counter the rumours doing the rounds. "In order to counter the rumour, police have been appealing to people not to be carried away by the rumours. We will take strict action against rumour mongers who are spreading rumours and creating social unrest," he said.
