DIBRUGARH: The Dibrugarh forest department on Monday busted an illegal bench mill at Mohanbari Nepali village in Dibrugarh.

"After getting specific information, about the functioning of the illegal bench mill in Mohanbari Nepali village, a team from Dibrugarh forest range office conducted a raid and busted an illegal bench mill. A huge quantity of timber was seized from the mill," said a forest official.

This seizure has been termed as a major success for the forest department in Dibrugarh district.

He said, "We have seized a modern advanced machine which was used for cutting timber. A huge quantity of timber were seized from the mill."

"We don't know who the owner of the mill is. We have started investigation into the matter," he said.

"Many illegal bench mills are operating in Rohmoria and Barbaruah. In Rohmoria area, most of the people have makeshift bench mills, which are used for cutting timber. After knowing everything, the forest department becomes a mute spectator," said a source.

He said, "The illegal bench mills owners in Dibrugarh have unholy nexus with the some officials of forest department. The mushroom-growth of the illegal bench mills has become a threat for the biodiversity of the region."
