DIGBOI: Following long-drawn speculations of the people of Digboi and political equations of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) top brass, both at the State and in the Centre, Suren Phukan, the incumbent BJP MLA, finally secured the party ticket to contest from 123 Digboi Assembly Constituency where polling will be held in the first phase, i.e, on March 27.

The BJP party high command, based on the achievements, accomplishments and other relevant ratings, has chosen Suren Phukan to contest again from his constituency, despite stiff debate initiated against allotting party ticket to him.

"Believing that Suren Phukan alone is capable of securing the Digboi seat for the party considering all necessary parameters, including the promotion of the party's interest during his five-year term, the party has reposed faith in him once again," said MP Rameswar Teli while talking to The Sentinel.

Meanwhile, speculations still persist as what will be the role of Arunjyoti Moran, an active student leader who was also expecting a party ticket. Unless Phukan resolves the in-house rift created for the past one year between his hardcore party workers and leaders, the road to success may not be smooth enough for him.

The supporters and workers of Phukan rejoiced on Friday evening, burning crackers at Charali Bazar and his home town Tingrai. "We are all set to extend a red carpet welcome to our leader on his arrival from Dibrugarh Airport on Saturday afternoon," said JP Gupta, a veteran BJP leader of Digboi.

Similarly, the happiness of the BJP workers and supporters in Margherita knew no bounds after Bhaskar Sharma, the BJP MLA of Margherita, was allotted the party ticket for Margherita legislative assembly seat. High profile and experienced BJP leader Lakhya Konwar, who was also seeking party ticket, had to accept the decision of the party high command.
