GUWAHATI:
Assam's Environment and Forest Minister, Parimal Suklabaidya, today inaugurated the Dihing Patkai National Park, the state's seventh national park.
The Dehing Patkai National Park spans an area of 234.26 square kilometres and is located in the Dibrugarh and Tinsukia regions' Jeypore and Soraipung Ranges. It is famous around the world for its rainforest, which is one of the few remaining tracts of Assam Valley Tropical Wet Evergreen Forests. Elephants, hoolock gibbons, golden cats, clouded leopards, and other species live in the park. In the park known for its vast biodiversity, 47 animal species, 47 reptile species, and 310 butterfly species have been reported to far.
Minister Suklabaidya inaugurated the National Park at a function held at the Jeypore Forest Inspection Bungalow, saying that following the declaration of Dehing Patkai as a national park on World Environment Day on June 5 by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, the official process was completed with the publication of the notification on June 15.
Suklabaidya believes the park's great floral and faunal variety, which is recognised for its rainforest, would soon elevate it to the status of one of the best national parks in the country.
He stated that by granting Dehing Patkai national park status, the protection of the rich flora and animals will be greatly aided.
Suklabaidya stated that the government will take the required efforts to enhance the park's infrastructure in order to attract tourists. He said that the park will provide jobless kids with new possibilities.
Rameswar Teli, Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, congratulated the Assam government and the NGO Nature's Beckon for making people's dreams come true by designating Dehing Patkai as a national park. He anticipated that the national park will acquire a cutting-edge guest house and other amenities to entice tourists.
Earlier, the Minister presented the park's formal notification to the people's representatives and the Director of Nature's Beckon. Suklabaidya also unveiled the plaque at the park's main entrance. He went on a safari with park authorities within the park.
