Haflong: The 31st National Road Safety Week, 2020, that had begun on January 11, ended with a public meeting at the Cultural Institute hall on Saturday followed by a colourful rally from the programme venue till the Council Rotary at Haflong under the aegis of the Dima Hasao District Transport Department.
Deputy Commissioner Amitabh Rajkhowa, who is also the chairman of the District Road Safety Committee, presided over the meeting. Dima Hasao Superintendent of Police Gaurav Abhijit Dilip also attended the meeting along with Joint Director Health Services, Dr. Dipali Barman, DIPRO, Purabi Phonglo Bodo and Assistant Professor, Haflong Government College, Limi Nampui. They stressed obeying traffic rules across the district in order to ensure road safety.
A booklet in three languages – English, Assamese, and Hindi – titled Golden tips: Rules of the Road, was released by the guests during the meeting. Stating the accidental data of the district as per the report with Police Authority, DTO Abdul Mazid said the total number of deaths due to accident on road in Dima Hasao was 10 lives in the year 2019 whereas, as per record in 2018 it was 17 and in 2017 it was 21.
The week-long programme was organized in a bid to promote safe driving, traffic discipline and awareness on the Motor Vehicle Act 2019, Assam. The Transport department officials conducted a series of awareness drives on road safety as part of the Road Safety Week such as ‘gift a rose’ to traffic violators, leaflet distribution, walkathon, street drama, drive against unfit vehicles and drive against over speeding.
