Dima Hasao Trinamool Congress submits memorandum to Deputy Commissioner

With the request to take immediate action for early completion of NH 27 and stringent measures for the prevention of accidents

HAFLONG: With the request to take immediate action for early completion of NH 27 and stringent measures for the prevention of accidents, the Dima Hasao Trinamool Congress submitted a memorandum to Dima Hasao Deputy Commissioner on Tuesday.

The memorandum signed by Satminthang Khongsai, Secretary AITC Assam and Aching Zeme, Convenor, TMC Dima Hasao stated that with profound grief, they, on behalf of the citizens of Dima Hasao, wrote to her regarding the deteriorating condition of National Highway 27 portion of Dima Hasao, with special regard to Manderdisa to Jatinga resulting in frequent vehicle collisions and fatalities.

Since the announcement of the East-West corridor, a 3300 km connecting Porbandar, Gujarat to Silchar, Assam in the year 1998 by our former Prime Minister Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee it was welcomed by one and all especially by the people of Dima Hasao (erstwhile North Cachar Hills) district as it was touted to immensely improve the economic conditions and infrastructure development of the district. But even after 24 years, the Dima Hasao portion of the NH27 has been incomplete.

The incomplete roads coupled with frequent sinking and landslides have debilitated the road. It has dangerous for commuters, resulting in many accidents and deaths since it has been opened for the public.

The lackadaisical attitude of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the construction companies involve in the construction and maintenance of the roads is baffling and their heedless attitude is the main reason for the occurrence of the many accidents and deaths, which were preventable.

Taking into consideration the number of accidents and deaths in this stretch of road it can be established that the causes are mainly because of lack of signages in dead ends, diversion and curves. The road is designed for a four lane with a huge divider in between but in many portions due to ongoing work or damages, diversions are made without proper signage sans radium lights which puzzle even the local drivers as such diversions are done frequently. Further maintenance and repairs of any damaged work is hardly carried out and no landslides debris are cleared rendering the road littered with huge boulders, mud and trees. To prevent further loss of life and accidents it is pertinent to take immediate action and initiate for early completion of the National Highway. Proper signage with radium lights in all diversion, dead ends and curves should be put up. In all accident prone areas speed limits should be lowered.

Therefore taking into consideration the interest of the general public immediate action should be taken. Failing of which the NHAI and the government will be held solely responsible for any further accidents in that area.
