District and Session Court, Nagaon convicted 20 years rigorous imprisonment for drug mafia

NAGAON: District and Session Court, Nagaon on Friday convicted RK Hopingson, a dreaded drug mafia hailing from Manipur, under the NDPS Act and sentenced him to 20 years rigorous imprisonment and also imposed Rs 2 lakh as a fine, sources said.

A case was registered against him at Nagaon PS here soon after he was arrested along with 20 soap cases filled with suspected narcotics substances like heroin near the Nonoi Outpost in October, 2021.

Following the trial under the NDPS Act for over a couple of years, the court on Friday sentenced him to 20 years rigorous imprisonment and also imposed Rs 2 lakh as a penalty, failing which he will be jailed for six more months, sources said.

While speaking to some media persons here, public prosecutor and senior law practitioner Bibha Phokan reiterated that the convicted drug mafia was arrested by Nagaon police near Nonoi Outpost during a routine checking in October 2021 while he was trafficking 20 soap cases filled with narcotics substances like heroin in a Fortuner car without a number plate.
