NAGAON: District Tobacco Control Cell, Nagaon organized a meeting of district level coordination committee (DLCC) on National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) at the conference hall of the office of the District Commissioner, Nagaon on Friday.
At the very beginning of the meeting, District Nodal Officer of NTCP Dr Biswaroop Gohain Baruah gave an explanation about the roles, duties and responsibilities of the various stakeholders and concerned members of the DLCC and the actions expected from them.
He mentioned that the primary objective of the meeting was to acquaint everyone concerned with the provisions and implementation of the cigarettes and other tobacco products Act (COTPA), 2003. Monitoring and reducing usage of tobacco products as per the Act was stressed upon the meeting.
Sub-Divisional Officer (Sadar), i/c Health, Nagaon Sauvik Bhuyan reiterated the necessity of implementation of the restrictions on tobacco usage in public spaces (as defined under COTPA 2003) as well as selling of tobacco products in an around educational institutions such as schools and colleges among others.
Mentioning the earlier order issued in the month of May 2023 by the Nagaon District Administration, he said that “public places” as defined under Section 3 Clause (I) of COTPA 2003 including premises of the District Commissioner’s Office, District Court Campus and other government office, buildings, schools, colleges, etc as “No tobacco zone” and prohibiting smoking, chewing of tobacco, gutka and other related products in the aforesaid premises.
Additional SP Pranab Jyoti Kalita, Deputy CEO of Nagaon Zilla Parishad, Superintendent of BPCH, Principal of NMCH, officials of Nagaon District Tobacco Control Cell along with other concerned stakeholders, committee members and officials from District Administration and Health departments were present in the meeting.
