DLCC meeting held; stress laid on awareness against tobacco use in Dibrugarh

DIBRUGARH: The District Level Coordination Committee (DLCC) on Tuesday held a meeting regarding implementation of the National Tobacco Control Programme in the district. The meeting was chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Phukan, Additional S P (Security and Intelligence) David Neingaite, members of the Committee, authorities concerned, stakeholders, representatives of organizations and departmental officers were present in the meeting.

The meeting focused on awareness among students about the health hazards caused by consumption of tobacco. In the meeting, it was reported about the various non-communicable diseases which can affect circulatory, nervous and respiratory systems and these diseases can be treated but not cured.

To deal with the issue, Focus Group Discussion (FGD) is formed which consists of ASHAs, AWW, youth groups, teachers, pregnant women, tobacco users and there are about 48 FGDs in Dibrugarh. It was reported in the meeting that from January till March 14, 2023, about 72 people were counselled by Tobacco Counselling Centres and two persons had quit tobacco.

A total of 10 training batches participated this year in tobacco awareness programmes comprising 30 participants each. Activities like training of pregnant women, awareness, screening of oral health for pre-cancerous lesions through Assam Cancer Care Foundation were conducted. Different IEC activities were also observed like celebration of World No Tobacco Day, World Environment Day etc.

Biswajit Phukan said that awareness regarding consumption of narcotics and other drugs which are widely prevalent in our society should also be taken into equal consideration.
