Doctor assaulted by miscreants at Bajali in Barpeta district

PATHSALA: Amid COVID-19 induced lockdown, a doctor was assaulted by a group of miscreants at Bajali in Barpeta district on Sunday.

The victim has been identified as Rakesh Das, a dentist from Howly of Barpera district.

According to reports, the attack took place at Galia of Bhawanipur area of the district. Dr Das informed that a car coming from wrong side hit his car while he was returning from Howly with his assistant. In this regard, Rakesh lodged an FIR against the two persons, namely M. Hussain and Salim Uddim at Bhawanipur outpost. He mentioned in the FIR that the miscreants attacked him and chocked his neck tightly and also threatened to kill him.

He said, "While I was returning home from my workplace the persons hit and ran over my car. I questioned the driver then they suddenly attacked me and chocked by neck to that extent where I was unable to breathe. As a result of which I got some moderate injury on my neck."

Indian Dental Association's Lower Assam Branch has condemned the assault.

Speaking to the media Dr Rupam Choudhury, secretary of the Lower Assam Branch says that in the background of COVID-19 pandemic medical and other health professionals are giving their best to ease pain and suffering of the people. We highly condemn such barbarous assault of a member of our fraternity and demand immediate arrest of culprits and strict action. He also expressed concerned in view of growing assault on doctors and other health professional and says that this will adversely affect the future of medical and other health profession.
