DOOMDOOMA: Close on the heels of three gamblers arrested by Doomdooma Police on Friday, five more were apprehended on Saturday. They are Dripen Moran, Jogesh Ray, Madhab Borah, Biki Sing and Biju Goswami. Police seized two motorcycles, four mobile phones, Rs 4,700 cash along with gambling articles from their possession and registered a case in Doomdooma PS bearing No. 479/21 U/s 14/15 Assam Gambling and betting Act against them.
Meanwhile, Diwali and Kali Puja passed off peacefully in the town and in its adjoining areas. However, the promulgation of CrPC 144 and the latest SOP declared by the Tinsukia district administration seemed to have a little impact on the people as there were practically no bar on bursting of firecrackers like before against declaration of administration to use green crackers in its place for minimizing air pollution. At the same time, the fixed time period of 8 pm to 10 pm for bursting of such crackers went unheeded although the duty for its compliance was primarily bestowed on the Police Stations of the district. Moreover, the joint appeal of the organisations like Ellora Vigyan Manch, Assam Science Society and others to the people, in general, and the students, in particular, fell flat.
