DEMOW: Under the patronage of Demow Press Club, the eighth death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was observed in Demow Jyoti Bishnu Building (Demow Public Hall) on Tuesday.
On the occasion, art and essay competitions were organized in Demow Girls’ High School on Tuesday afternoon where the students of the local schools of Demow participated. In the evening, an earthen lamp was lit and garland was offered at the portrait of Dr.Bhupen Hazarika by Dr.MS Lakshmi Priya, Deputy Commissioner of Sivasagar, and Anil Kumar Dey, president of Demow Press Club.
Earthen lamps were also lit in Demow public playground on Tuesday evening. Deputy Commissioner Dr. MS Lakshmi Priya said that Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was the pride of not only Assam but of the entire country. A documentary prepared by Demow Press Club on the legend’s life was screened. Umesh Chetia, who received the Best Journalist Award in the Achiever Award function from Sadin-Pratidin Group recently, was felicitated by Demow Press Club with a gamosa and certificate.
Naren Gogoi, an artist and a resident of Bahuwabari near Demow who belongs to a poor family was also felicitated with a gamosa, certificate, and cash. School students performed songs and dances in the programme. The winners of the drawing and essay competitions were given certificates and books.
