DHUBRI: A dreaded cattle smuggler, Adam Ali was killed in an encounter with police near Assam-Bengal inter-state border of Dhubri district in the wee hours on Wednesday.

Adam was earlier arrested in October, 2020 along with live ammunition of AK-47, but later jumped bail and started operating from the Coochbehar district of West Bengal.

A senior police officer informed that they had specific information about Adam hiding in Halakur adjacent the inter-state border, and when police raided the area, he had run away but Dhubri police continuously chased him and at last, caught him in the Assam-Bengal inter-state border

"However, during police interrogation, he disclosed about the presence of his associates with arms and ammunition to be sold in the Kokrajhar district. The police soon went in that direction but as soon as they reached the Kokrajhar border (Basbari), the team was ambushed by Adam's armed men and in the encounter, Adam was killed," the police source further said.

When contacted by The Sentinel, Dhubri Superintendent of Police, Abhijit Gurav Dilip informed that during the ambush, the police team also fired three rounds from a service pistol in self defense.

"Later, all the injured persons were immediately brought to the Dhubri Civil Hospital where the on-duty doctor examined Adam Ali and declared him dead after investigation. The body was identified by his brother Kadam Ali and other family members," the SP further informed.

After a postmortem done by a team of doctors under videography, Adam's body was handed over to the family members. One AK series rifle was recovered from the ambush site.
