DHUBRI: A wanted and notorious dacoit was shot at by police while fleeing from police custody. A notorious and dreaded dacoit wanted in several robbery, murder and black mailing cases in lower Assam districts, including recent two cases of robberies in Dhubri district, Sahidul Islam alias Sampatka was shot by police near Chapar area while he was trying to flee from police custody. He was grievously injured and taken to Dhubri Civil Hospital.

Sahidul Islam was wanted in many cases of robbery, killing and black mailing in Dhubri, Goalpara district and other districts of lower Assam. Sahidul, before decamping with cash and valuables, would allegedly hit women hard to make them unconscious. He would then shoot videos with them in compromising condition and later blackmail them with those videos and photographs, a police source informed.

Dhubri Superintendent of Police Abhishek Gaurav, while addressing media persons in front of his residential bungalow on Saturday, informed that police swung into action after the robbery cases in Hatipota and Srigram recently. Police started getting information about whereabouts of Sahidul from all directions since the last five days and finally he was arrested from Assam-Meghalaya inter-State border on Friday, Abhishek Gaurav informed.

He also said that when Sahidul was brought to the place near Chapor at night to show where he had concealed cash and valuables, Sahidul pleaded to the police to unlock his handcuff as he wanted to go to the toilet. Police did so but Sahidul tried to flee taking advantage of the dark. When despite warning he did not stop, police fired at his right leg.
