Guwahati: A pilot project has been initiated at the Jia Bharali river in Jamuguri by the Assam Government in a bid to combat the menace of flood and erosion in the state and dredging and excavation works is being carried out at the site of the project.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated this project in the presence of Sootea Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Padma Hazarika along with Member of Parliament (MP) Pallab Lochan Das.

The Chief Minister said that around 2 km will be dredged during the first phase of the project and subsequently, will be stretched to 20 km.

He also added that the later phase will be carried out in other tributaries of Assam in a systematic manner.

The dredger was imported from the United States and reached its destination, the Mumbai Port via the sea route. The dredger was then shipped to Assam via the land route.

The CM asserted that the menace of erosion will finally come to an end and will be completely exterminated in due course of time.

It is worth noting that this particular area has a deep-rooted problem of erosion. Thousands of hectares of agricultural land have already been submerged in the river in Jamugiri after being hit by an erosion, which flows from neighboring Arunachal Pradesh.

The Jia Bharali River, which is also known as Kameng, happens to be a tributary of the Brahmaputra River. The hills of Arunachal Pradesh is its place of origin and it flows through the heart of Tezpur before its convergence with the Brahmaputra river.

The Assam CM has pledged to improve the infrastructure of the state and the government has undertaken several large scale developmental projects of this magnitude.
