DHUBRI: A huge quantity of drugs, including sleeping tablets and cough syrup, were seized by a police team led by Officer-in-charge of Dhubri Police Station, Partha Pratim Gogoi at night on Monday.

Police searched a Scooty coming from Gauripur side to Dhubri town and recovered the drugs hidden inside the Scooty box, police source said. The peddler was identified as Amir Ali from Church road under Dhubri Sadar Police Station. He was allegedly involved in supplying drugs to the town area and rural area as well, sources said.

However, several civilians rushed the spot and created a chaotic situation based on rumours regarding a gang of robbers named 'black man'. A mob of about 200 boys also started attacking the police, demanding to hand over the arrested accused to them.

Local people mistook the arrested person as 'black man' dacoit and gheraoed the police vehicle. They demanded that the accused should be handed over to them and were even about to attack. But police resorted to lathicharge and dispersed the mob. In the lathicharge, one police constable, Bishal Sutradhar sustained injury on his left leg.

Talking to The Sentinel, Officer-in-charge of Dhubri Police Station, Partha Pratim Gogoi said, "The mob misunderstood that the police had arrested 'black man' dacoit. The mob wanted to teach him a lesson." "We have registered a case against the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 and further investigation is on," Gogoi added.
