Drugs worth Rs 1,920 crore set ablaze in Silchar

A huge quantity of contraband narcotic items worth Rs 1920.02 crore were destroyed in Silchar by Cachar police.

SILCHAR: A huge quantity of contraband narcotic items worth Rs 1920.02 crore were destroyed in Silchar by Cachar police. On Saturday, DIG, Southern Range Kangkan Jyoti Saikia and SP Cachar ceremonially set ablaze the narcotic substance in Srikona near Silchar. In Karimganj too contraband narcotic substances worth Rs 70 crores were destroyed.

The huge substance contained 6.14 kg of heroine worth Rs.31.07 crore, 683 kgs of ganja worth Rs 1751.89, Yaba tablets worth Rs 120.80 crore. The drive was taken in accordance with court order. Three districts of Barak Valley had always been a safe passage for smuggling of illicit narcotic substance as the valley shares inter state as well as international borders. Drugs like marijuana, Yaba tablet, heroin, cough syrup were smuggled from Myanmar via Mizoram. Even Hailakandi district too shares border with Mizoram and often used as a safe passage. Karimganj on the other hand shares border with Bangladesh and hence illicit drug peddlers used the district regularly. Himanta Biswa Sarma taking the charge of Chief Minister instructed the police to launch massive operation against drug racket. DIG Saikia lauded the step taken by the Chief Minister against the drug mafia.
