Durga Puja Will Be Celebrated In Assam Following Covid Protocols, Says Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Wednesday, said Durga Puja would be celebrated in the state following Covid protocols.

Durga Puja, which is the biggest festival of Bengalis, starts on October 11. The four-day fest will conclude on October 15. Last year too, various restrictions were imposed across the state during the festive occasion by the government in view of the pandemic situation.

Speaking about Durga Puja on Wednesday, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Durga Puja would definitely be celebrated in the state, but following all the Covid protocols.

It may be mentioned that there were a feeling of uncertainty among people, puja organisers and idol makers about the celebration of Durga Puja; however, the statement by Himanta has surely brought relief for everyone. This is going to be the second time when Durga Puja will be celebrated in the state with restrictions in view of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

It may be mentioned that The state Health Department has set the target of October 15, 2021, for inoculating at least the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to all eligible people in the state. The vaccination drive for the general public started in March 2021 in the state. According to Health Department sources, around 2.30 crore people in the state are eligible (18+) for taking Covid-19 vaccines.

Till 6 pm on Tuesday (September 7), 1,90,45,374 people in the state got inoculated - 1,55,87,485 first dose and 34,57,889 second dose. Still now, around 75 lakh eligible people are yet to take the Covid-19 vaccine. The supply of the Covid-19 vaccine to the state has picked up the pace now. The department is trying to intensify the vaccination drive.
