Biswanath: In yet another incident of physical attack on doctors in Assam amid the ongoing COVID pandemic, miscreants attacked the medical officer of the Majuligarh tea garden on Wednesday (June 9) evening. Fortunately, Dr Basanta Kumar Goswami was saved by his domestic staff.

He was lucky enough to escape without any grievous injuries. The attack on the doctor happened when he was out for his evening walk. The doctor has filed a complaint against the unknown miscreants with the Biswanath police.

"I finished my duty at the tea garden hospital and was back home. I was finishing my evening walk in front of my house and going inside the house when suddenly few people entered the gate and started pushing me and jostling me. I feel to the ground. All that I could hear them say is, 'He is the one'. But I could not understand anything. My domestic help came running and she asked me to rush indoors. That is how I was saved," Dr Goswami said.

Dr Goswami said that at 81 years of age he was just trying to help people and serving them as a doctor.

The victim doctor informed that some people of the tea estate are unhappy with the COVID-19 restrictions imposed by the government as they are not being able to keep their shops. They think that the tea estate doctor advised the management to impose such restrictions in the garden. As per the restrictions, the owners have to shut down their shops at 12pm everyday. Last evening a group of people of the garden went to meet their management to discuss the matter. On their way they saw the doctor doing his evening walk. All of a sudden, some people from the group attacked the doctor.

Important to mention here that many people in the Majuligarh tea estate have been infected by the deadly coronavirus. Hence, the garden management has been very strict in ensuring adherence to the COVID-19 restrictions.

Since June 3, several cases of assault on doctors have been reported from across Assam.
