SILCHAR: BJP legislator Dipayan Chakraborty on Friday, submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and urged him for necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of non-tribal people, especially Bengalis/Hindus in Meghalaya where a rally by a tribal organisation recently turned violent leaving several people from non-tribal communities injured.

Dipayan stated in the memorandum that numerous incidents of attacks on non-tribal people, particularly Hindus, have taken place in the hill State over the years and claimed the objective behind the attacks was ethnic cleansing and genocide. Over three thousand incidents of hate crime have been reported from the neighbouring State over the past few decades and still no one was brought to justice for their crimes against the Hindu community, Dipayan stated in the memorandum. Further, he sought CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma's intervention into the matter and appealed to him to ensure the safety and security of Hindus in that State, stated a press release.
