Hojai: Amid the ongoing eviction drive against the illegal encroachment in the border areas of Karbi Anglong- Hojai District by the Karbi Anglong District Administration since March 2, 2019, there are reports surfacing in the media that a lady identified as Narzee Fatema Begum (name changed) had succumbed to injuries on Monday evening at around 4.30 pm in Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH). As per a police report, the matter got intensified soon after the death report of the lady.
Around 800 plus people gathered and blocked the roadways near Nakhuti Police Station on Tuesday morning leading to massive traffic congestion in the area.
It may be mentioned that as per police investigations, during the eviction drive at Lankaijaan of Sarkebasti area of Karbi Anglong-Hojai District border on March 4, there are allegations from the local people that the Karbi Anglong District administration had destroyed the houses in the region and had also burnt them down which were illegally occupied by the alleged encroachers.
The matter got intensified after few people had tried to obstruct the Administration officials and staffs who were reportedly carrying out the eviction drive in the area, leading to a scuffle.
It has also been reported that during the scuffle, a pregnant lady Narzee Fatema Begum also received few injuries and was immediately shifted to Hojai Civil Hospital. She was later referred to Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) for better treatment.
It has also come to light that the woman had also delivered a baby and succumbed to injuries in the GMCH hospital.
Furthermore, the locals staged a protest today demanding the government to provide a compensation of Rs 10 Lakh to the family of the deceased.
Speaking to The Sentinel Digital in connection to the matter, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Suman Chakraborty said that a large number of the angry crowd carried the body of the deceased woman who died at the GMCH; the matter went chaotic after several tried to block the roadways near Nakhuti Bazaar area today morning.
“We have managed to calm down the situation and had brought the situation under control,” said the Hojai ASP Suman Chakraborty.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased woman has been sent for post mortem, informed the ASP further.
