Farmers' awareness programme held in Nagaon

NAGAON: A daylong farmers' awareness programme on 'Utility of weather forecasting in Agriculture' was held under GKMS, RARS, AAU, Shillongani, Nagaon on Monday at Pitambar Debagoswami High School, Chalchali Chariali, Barhampur, Nagaon.

The awareness programme was chaired by the village head of Chalchali, Nagaon Padum Bora where about 100 farmers including Principal Scientist Dr. D.C.Hazarika, Scientist (Horticulture) Dr. N. Rahman, Scientist (Soil science), G. Kataki took active participation.

The objective of the programme was described by Scientist, GKMS, N.Deka. This was followed by a brief lecture by G. Kataki on the topic - Soil, climate and natural resource management to focus on the celebration of International Forest Day. Dr. D. Hazarika delivered a lecture on the weather as science to crop where principles of economic uplift, livelihood security & food security measures could be possible against vagaries of climate with preparedness by using modern meteorological applications and advisories.

Dr. N. Rahman had elaborated about horticultural crops, its marketing aspect and commercial cultivation of horticultural crops in business mode. She also elaborated on scientific 'Bari System" and focused on Bamboo cultivation for Carbon sequestration and alternate energy source.

N.Deka delivered a lecture about the importance and practical utility of GKMS in agriculture and its various upgrades since its inception in 2007. He urged the gathering to describe different weather forecasting systems and use of agromet advisory to follow various agricultural operations and allies such as fishery, veterinary etc. based on weather forecasting of IMD, Pune at the block level.

He had also made aware of participants of the programme about Meghdoot and Damini applications and its practical utility and installation procedure. The chairman P. Bora, in his speech showed gratitude to RARS, AAU, Shillongani, Nagaon for organizing this awareness programme in the village. The awareness programme was concluded by a plantation programme, a release added.
