Financial irregularities: BJP leader arrested in Lakhimpur district

LAKHIMPUR: The misdeeds of a section of BJP leaders, who are maintaining a majestic life style in public, have come to light in Lakhimpur district. In a significant development, Lakhimpur Police arrested a leader in the district on Tuesday for alleged extortion charge and participating in brokerage activities.

The BJP leader has been identified as Keramat Ali, who is the chairman of the Minorities Development Board in Lakhimpur district at the time of his arrest. He is accused of extorting money from individuals by using the names of MLAs and MPs. He has been charged for demanding money in return of providing government jobs, contracts and benefits of government schemes. The BJP leader had allegedly been befooling people for long time by introducing himself of having close contacts with top BJP leaders, MLAs and MPs.

Regarding the arrest of Keramot Ali, Lakhimpur ASP Jayanta Baruah, when contacted said, “Keramot Ali, the chairman of Lakhimpur District Minorities Development Board, has been involved in financial irregularities for long time. We came to know that he collected money from individuals in the name of BJP MLAs and MPs. The victims have now proceeded to the Police Station and lodged complaints against him. We have also come to know that more person are involved with him in a racket. Now investigation is going on. Financial investigation will also be conducted against him.”

The ASP further said, “As many as 15 to 20 individuals have filed complaints against Keramot Ali. We got such complaints before also. We recently came to know that he is involved in such a racket. Extortion of money in the name of public representatives is a matter of serious concern, so we are also taking the issue seriously.”

Police detained Keramot Ali on Tuesday morning from his residence, located at Bogolijan under North Lakhimpur Police Station. According to Lakhimpur Police, the amount, he involved in irregularities, will be of more than one crore. The amount might increase as the number of victims, extorted by him, is increasing. Ali was produced in the court at the time of filing this report. Lakhimpur Police will seek the extortionist in their remand for further interrogation. A case vide No. 400/2023 US 120(B)/420/406/294/506 IPC has been registered at North Lakhimpur Police Station.
