Guwahati: Professor Anindya Sen, an Assistant Professor at the Assam University in Silchar has landed in the proverbial soup after allegedly making "derogatory comments" about  Ramayana protagonist Ram.

The FIR also claims that Sen "continuously posts such abusive posts defaming Hindu dharma and also abuses constitutional posts like Prime Minister and Home Minister of the country."

Rohit Chanda, a student member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), who has lodged the FIR, sais that "insulting Hindu Gods and Goddess and hurting the religious sentiments have become a fashion in Silchar."

He further said that when people such as professors "propagate such thoughts", others follow suit. He claimed that these practices have culminated in acts such as school students promoting the consumption of beef, which is considered a major taboo in the Hindu religion.

We have filed an FIR against professor Anindya Sen as we believe it is important for such hate-mongers who keep posting provocatory remarks to intentionally hurt religious sentiments to be investigated and punished," the ABVP member added.

A case has been registered against the Assam University Assistant Professor under sections 295A, 294, and 501 on the basis of the FIR.

In the incriminating post that has been named in the FIR, Sen can be seen taking a jibe at the Ramayana protagonist for abandoning his wife, Sita.

The Facebook post by Sen reads.

"She: And all this drama for a man who threw out his wife.

Me: Ya. Abandoned his wife. Right.

She: In fear of what 'people would say.'

Me: Oh! You mean Sriramchandral! I was thinking of you know who!

Sen later clarified that he did not wish to "insult" the Hindu God and hurt religious sentiments. "There are various versions of Ramanaya and in many of them, it is clearly mentioned that Sri Ram Chandra had abandoned his wife at Valmiki's Ashram. For this act, Sri Ram Chandra has been criticized by many and the same has been chronicled too. I had just shared that criticism", he told media.

The Assam University Assistant professor's post came to the limelight against the backdrop of the Ram mandir bhoomi poojan in Ayodhya on August 5, which was attended by the country's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
