BISWANATH CHARIALI: The first Assamese encyclopedic glossary of science and technology terms was formally released by noted scientist and science writer Dr Kulendu Pathak in a meeting held in Guwahati recently.

The illustrated glossary, compiled and edited by Prof. Kshiradhar Baruah, a noted science writer and a recipient of National Prize for Science Communication, covers more than 73,000 English technical terms of 16 subjects with more than 125,000 Assamese equivalents. In his speech, Dr Pathak said that this valuable piece of work accomplished by one of his students Prof. Baruah, is a rare contribution to the development of Assamese science literature.

Dr Dinesh Chandra Goswami, a distinguished Assamese science litterateur, said that since Gauhati University published the first Assamese science glossary containing 32,000 terms of 9 subjects in 1973, this is the important and enlarged work with an encyclopedic theme, which Baruah has completed within a period of 10 years. This glossary will surely help science writers, communicators, journalists, translators, text book writers etc., in writing science in Assamese language.

The compiler, Prof. Baruah expressed how he felt the lack of proper Assamese equivalents for English science terms when he began popular science writing during 1960s, and the problem still exists with the growing advancement of modern science and technology.
