First foundation day of Padmanath Gohain Baruah Government Model College observed

The first foundation day of Padmanath Gohain Baruah (PNGB) Government Model College, Kakapather was observed on Monday with a day-long programme.

DOOMDOOMA: The first foundation day of Padmanath Gohain Baruah (PNGB) Government Model College, Kakapather was observed on Monday with a day-long programme. The programme got underway with hoisting of college flag in the morning by Principal Dr Thanuram Majinder. It was followed by plantation of tea saplings taken up under the auspices of Rotary Club of Digboi by the students of the college.

The foundation day observance meeting began with lighting of lamp before the portrait of Sahitya Kandari Padma Nath Gohain Baruah by the village head of Kapahtoli village Tileswar Moran and presentation of a welcome chorus by the students. Principal Dr Majinder welcomed the guests amongst whom Uttam Dowerah, former Head, English department, Women College, Tinsukia, Dr Prabhat Sarmah, Sociology department, Digboi Women College, and former Revenue officer and environmental activist Gopal Das attended the programme as distinguished guests.

In his speech Uttam Dowerah urged the students to get rid of the general phobia towards English language while Dr Prabhat Sarmah and Gopal Das laid great emphasis on studying books for mental development as well as to develop a positive attitude towards life. On the other hand, both of them handed over two packets of books meant for the students to the Principal as a goodwill gesture. The meeting was also addressed by former president, Tinsukia Zila Parishad, Lalit Moran, village head, Kapahtoli village, Tileswar Moran, social activist Suren Neog and head of English department of the college, Sanjib Kalita.

In the end, the winners of the photography and essay competitions organized by the English and Sociology department respectively were awarded prizes. The significant aspect of the foundation day celebration was presentation of a documentary on the progress of the academic and cultural aspects of the college.
