GUWAHATI: The District Magistrate of Charaideo has issued a vide order under the 144 section of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) restricting the usage of fishing nets during the breeding season of fishes.
According to the order, one cannot use specific fishing nets in the area for 60 days from 1st April 2022 to 15 July 2022 which is the reproductive season of fish.
Different types of fishing nets like fasijal, masijal, berjal and others with meshes less than 7cm bar/14 centre are banned for the aforementioned days.
As informed by the officials catching and killing of brood fishes is also prohibited during the breeding period starting from Friday 1st April.
Fishes carrying sperms and eggs of the fish species such as Catla (Bahu), Mrigal (Mirika), Koliajora (Mali) Rohu, Kurhi, Chital, Ghoria and Khoria in a proclaimed fishery are banned.
Official further informed that the usage of movable bana with a gap of less than 7 centimetre square for fishing activity in any fisheries, rivers, beels or dobas is also restricted as per the order issued.
Notably, the order by the district magistrate takes immediate effect and will continue to stay in effect for the upcoming 60 days from the date of issue.
If anyone is found violating the order he/she will be punished under section 1880 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) said an official.
The ban on the killing of fish and usage of fishing nets in the Charaideo district of Assam will remain effective till the fish's reproduction season ends.
It may be mentioned that according to the Assam Fishery (Amendment) Rule, 2005 and the Assam Fishery Rules 1953, every year during the breeding period of fishes i.e.1 April- 15 July a ban is imposed on the usage of specific fishing nets made up of different sizes and meshes.
