Flood situation worsens in Lakhimpur district due to heavy downpour

LAKHIMPUR: The flood situation of Lakhimpur has worsened due to heavy downpour in the district and neighbouring State of Arunachal Pradesh. Flood has hit 6 more villages under the district, raising the number of affected villages to 24 from 16.

Notably, the sudden surge of the overflowing water of the Singara River breached its right embankment at Sholmoriya under Naoboicha Revenue Circle of district on Wednesday around 1.00 pm. The flood caused by the river already washed away around 100 meter-long stretch of the said embankment and inundated around several villages under Naoboicha Revenue Circle. Since then, total of 13 villages, named Dolohat, Bharalua, No.1 Kalakhowa, No.2 Kalakhowa, No. 2 Borsala, Balitika, Dayangia, Balijan, Haripur, Chamua, Konwarpur, Sholmoria, Phukandoloni have been submerged by flood for the fourth day. The flood affected people of these villages have to spend their days suffering in explicable plight. River Singara has already changed its course after breeching the embankment.

On the other hand, flood caused by River Kakoi has hit two villages, viz- NC Goroimari and Naharbari under Kadam RC while No.1 Hindu Gaon under North Lakhimpur RC has been submerged by flood caused by Subansiri River till Friday. However, flood began to recede from these villages on Saturday. On the other hand, Dropang River and Dihiri have inundated a total of eight villages under Narayanpur RC till Friday. These villages were No. 2 Tatibahar, No. 1 Tatibahar, No. 4 Tatibahar, No. 2 Notgaon, No. 1 Maghnuwa, Pulinaharani, Athanibari and Chumdhara. On Saturday, flood inundated 11 more villages named Borthekarabari, No. 1 Sarjan, Kachikota, No.1 Khalihamari, Majordoloni, Bhutardoloni, Nidanchuwa, Futabhog, No. 1 Uttakathani, No. 1 Arapathar, No. 2 Arapathar on Saturday. In the district, the current wave of flood has affected a total of 25,275 people, 180.57 hectares of crop area, 5354 number of livestock including 3780 big animals and 1574 small animals as per report found from District Disaster Management Authority.

Moreover, heavy downpour and overflowing water of several rivers of the district have caused massive infrastructure damages. A Farm bundh, L/S-175 M R/S-175 M, at Pulinaharani was breached by River Dihiri near Dihiri High School on Friday. Similarly River Gabharu eroded away a part of Garhmur Block to Tunijan road (under PMGSY Package No. AS-15-194) under Bihpuria RC. On Saturday, an agri-bundh was damaged at Nadika Mofiz Police Tiniali to Ahom gaon via Basar gaon under Yubanagar Gaon Panchayat under Bihpuria RC while pipeline of a Public Water Supply System (PWSS) was damaged under Menehapar Chuburi (Nadika). Three bamboo foot bridge were damaged by increasing water level of the River Kakoi at Gujihola under Kadam RC. Similarly, pipeline of a PWSS was damaged at Joyram Chubri at No. 2 Rangati village under Narayanpur RC.

On the other hand, NEPCO has released excessive water from the catchment area of the Ranganadi Hydro Electric Plant through Ranganadi from Friday increasing the possibility of worst flood in the district. On Friday, the NEEPCO released the excessive water from the RHEP through Dam Gate No 1 by 400 mm from 12:25 pm, 700 mm from 12:35 pm, 1000 mm from 12:45 pm, 1300 mm from 1:10 pm, 1000 mm from 4:50 pm, 700 mm from 7.15 pm, 500 mm at 9:30 pm and 400 mm from 3.40 am on Saturday. At the time of filing this report, excessive water from the RHEP catchment area has been released by opening the same Dam Gate by 300 mm from 8.10 am.

Notably, India Materilogical Department (IMD) of Guwahati issued forecast for thunderstorm with lightning very likely to occur over Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dima Hasao, Karimganj, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Udalguri districts of Assam in the next 24 hours.
