‘Food Safety on Wheels’ operationalized in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: For the first time ever in the State, Lakhimpur district has introduced a food safety van, titled as ‘Food Safety on Wheels’, for the greater interest of the public. The van has been launched under the auspices of Food Safety Department of Lakhimpur district. The van was sent to the district from Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) through the Commissioner of the Food Safety Department, Government of Assam, on May 15.

On Monday, Geetalee Duworah, Additional Deputy Commissioner in charge of Health Department of Lakhimpur district, inaugurated the operationalization and functioning of the food safety van in a ceremonial programme held in the premises of the Office of the Joint Director, Health Services, Lakhimpur district. Speaking on the occasion, Geetalee Dueorah appreciated the Food Safety Department of the district for its initiative of introducing the van concerned for the first time ever in the State. She further said that the people of Lakhimpur would be benefitted with the service rendered by the van.

Food Safety Officer Karuna Kanta Doley said that the van would carry out surveillance, awareness and training regarding food safety covering the districts of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji. “The food safety team in the van will conduct spot testing of the food items available in the market, create awareness on food safety among the consumers and conduct training too on the standards of the food items. The team will be comprised of a chemist and a laboratory technician under the leadership of the Food Safety Officer,” Karuna Kanta Doley added. Dr. Gunin Kumar Gogoi, Joint Director of Health Services, Lakhimpur district, also spoke on the occasion. The programme was attended by various officers and employees of the Health Department.
