Former bureaucrat Nila Nath Barua passes away in Guwahati

Retired bureaucrat Nila Nath Barua, who had served as the Deputy Commissioner of undivided Kamrup, died on Tuesday following a prolonged illness at a private nursing home in Guwahati.

GUWAHATI: Retired bureaucrat Nila Nath Barua, who had served as the Deputy Commissioner of undivided Kamrup, died on Tuesday following a prolonged illness at a private nursing home in Guwahati. He was 89 and is survived by his wife, two sons, daughters-in-law and two grandsons. Barua had joined as a Class I Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer in 1961 and was promoted to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1982. Besides his tenure as the Kamrup Deputy Commissioner, Barua had served in various important posts including Director of Industries and Commissioner of Taxes, among others. He had also participated in an international conference on Human Resource Development at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

Barua retired from service in April 1994. After retirement, he had also served as the Member Secretary of the Assam Backward Classes Commission for a period of three years from April 1994. A brilliant student, Barua had passed the matriculation examinations from Jorhat Government Boy's College in first division and had come first in Gauhati University in Intermediate of Arts examinations in 1952. He had graduated in Mathematics from J B College, Jorhat and post graduated from Gauhati University in 1956
