Former DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta’s Father Passes Away, CM Express Grief

GUWAHATI: In the early hours of Monday in Sivasagar, Assam, Vaishnav Pandit Lilakanta Mahanta, the father of former director general of police Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, passed away. He was 92 years old.

He served as Sri Sri Borkhatpar Satra's previous Satradhikar. At roughly 2.15 am, Sri Sri Lilakanta Mahanta passed away at his home in Konwarpur. Due to an illness brought on by advancing age, he had been gravely sick for the past few days.

Sri Sri Lilakanta Mahanta presided over the Asom Sattra Mahasabha twice during his lifetime. On Twitter, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his sympathies and noted that the passing of the former Satradhikar was a significant loss for the Assamese community. 

Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta completed his tenure as the DGP of Assam on 31st of January, 2023. He has been replaced by GP Singh, who took charge of the position from 1st February, 2023. Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta belongs to the 1988 batch of Assam-Meghalaya cadre.

Renowned Assamese poet and Jnanpith Award recipient Nilmani Phookan passed away at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here on Thursday. He was 89.

According to Achyut Patowary, Superintendent of the GMCH, Phookan breathed his last at 11.55 am after being admitted to the GMCH on Wednesday night from a city-based private hospital in a critical condition. The ailing poet had contracted septic shock that spread throughout his body and was being treated by doctors from the cardiology, neurology, anesthesia, and medicine departments. 

The GMCH Superintendent said that Phookan was undergoing non-invasive ventilation (NIV) at the time of his demise. Minister Ashok Singhal visited Gauhati Medical College and Hospital to pay his tributes to the poet on Thursday. He prayed for the poet's soul and extended his deepest condolences to the family for their great loss.
