MANGALDAI: Former Director General Medical Services of Oman, Army Col (retd) Mahananda Medhi breathed his last at 6.15 am on Thursday in a private hospital in Guwahati following cardiac arrest. He was 78.
He went on deputation from the Indian Army as a Captain (Doctor) and rose to the position of Director General Medical Services in Oman Army. Though he was born at Nagarbera in South Kamrup, after retirement he settled down at Hengerabari, Guwahati. Col. (retd) Mahananda Medhi was the first batch student of MBBS course in Gauhati Medical College. Initially, he had joined the Army Medical Corps, but later he joined Oman Army on deputation from Indian Army as a Captain (doctor). He took part in the Dhofar War for Oman Army as an Infantry man. Finally, he was promoted to the rank of Director General of Medical Services for Oman Army and earned tremendous respect in Oman, including people from the palace.
Col Medhi was a true Assamese. His wife Dr Shanti Medhi had also joined as the Head of Gynaecology in Oman Army and also in American Hospital in Dubai. Few days back, Col (Dr) Medhi arranged a very good exhibition of his rare collection in his Hengerabari house. He donated very liberally for construction of Chemistry building of Nagarbera College and also for uplift of a number of temples in Nagarbera and its suburbs. His funeral was performed on Thursday afternoon at the public crematorium at Nabagraha. Besides his wife, Dr. Shanti Medhi, he leaves behind his only son Gunajit Medhi, working as an engineer in the USA, and a host of relatives.
