Former minister Dileswar Tanti passes away at GMCH

Former Labour minister and former MLA of Doomdooma LAC, Dileswar Tanti (79) passed away at GMCH

DOOMDOOMA: Former Labour minister and former MLA of Doomdooma LAC, Dileswar Tanti (79) passed away at Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) on Wednesday.

Born to Tilak Tanti and Sonamoni Tanti on February 2, 1944, Dileswar Tanti had his early education at Digboi. After qualifying his MA in Economics from Gauhati University (GU), he served as a lecturer of Economics in Sonari College during 1970 -1971. Thereafter, he served as an Assistant Secretary of Asam Chah Mazdoor Sangha(ACMS), Doomdooma Branch from 1971 to 1978. He got elected to Assam Assembly in 1978 from Doomdooma constituency and retained the post till 2005. During 1991 to 1996 he was labour minister in the Hiteswar Saikia ministry. He was elected general secretary of ACMS central committee in 2009.

He got married to Kamala Tanti (Sawachi) in 1971, who predeceased him a few years back. He is survived by two daughters and a son.

Tanti has three published books to his credit - Chah Janagosthir Lokageetar Samikhya, Asamor Chah Janagosthir Kichu Katha and Jhumoir geetor maje maje. He carved a niche for himself as a tea tribe writer. He was well versed in tea tribe culture and could sing their ethnic songs quite effortlessly.

The news of his death spread like wildfire at Doomdooma and Barhapjan - where he lived permanently after coming to Doomdooma - and was widely mourned by many organizations, including ACMS, Doomdooma Sakha Xahitya Xabha, Doomdooma Press Club, MLA Rupesh Goala, former Union Minister and ACMS president Paban Singh Ghatowar.
