Former Principal of Doomdooma College Bina Deka gets Award Posthumously

DOOMDOOMA: Bina Deka, founder president of Sadou Asam Lekhika Samaroh Samity, Doomdooma Sakha and former Principal, Doomdooma College, was awarded the Sadou Asam Lekhika Samaroh Samity (SALSS)' Kharanon Barthakur good organizer's award for 2022 posthumously at a function held at Dhekiajuli on Sunday.

In the meeting held under the auspices of SALSS, in collaboration with its Sonitpur district committee, to commemorate the second death anniversary of its founder president Padma Shri Shila Barthakur and to give away the Kharanon Barthakur good organizer's award for 2022 at the Bharat Ratna Sudhakantha Bhupen Hazarika cultural centre, the award was received by Dibyalata Deka, a founder member of Doomdooma Sakha Lekhika Samaroh Samity, on behalf of Bina Deka's family.

Journalist Dhiren Deka, husband of Dibyalata Deka and a relative of Bina Deka, was also present on the occasion. The award instituted in 2013 consists of a citation, a seleng sadar and cash award of Rs 10,000 and is given away every year to a member showing proficiency in organizational work at the grassroots level with cooperation offered by Padma Shri Dr Shila Barthakur's family. Before receiving the award, Dibyalata Deka spoke about the life and achievements of Bina Deka and the dedication she showed in nurturing the organization from scratch.

In the beginning, working president of SALSS, Subarna Saikia Bordoloi lit the lamp in front of the portrait of Dr Shila Barthakur. Dr Sanjib Barthakur, her son, garlanded her portrait. On the other hand, Pushpa Gogoi, State working president, lit the lamp in front of the portrait of Kharanon Barthakur. Anupama Das, president, Dhekiajuli branch, garlanded his portrait while vice-president Mamoni Bhuyan Hazarika and Manomati Kurmi took the lead in smriti tarpan along with the presidents and the secretaries of different district units present there.

The open session held thereafter with president Dr Charu Saharia Nath in the chair was inaugurated by distinguished writer and child litterateur Nilima Bora. Ruma Devi, president, Sonitpur district unit, welcomed the guests. Working president of SALSS, Subarna Saikia Bordoloi in her speech told the gathering about the life and achievements of Shila Barthakur and Kharanon Barthakur and the type of patronage Kharanon Barthakur had offered to Lekhika Samaroh Samity while reminding the audience about the strong foundation laid by Chandra Prabha Saikiani in the field of women empowerment during the pre-Independence period.

On the other hand, Ramesh Chandra Bora, former Headmaster, Dhekiajuli Secondary School, in his speech as appointed speaker, reminisced the unique contribution to the society offered by Kharanon Barthakur who was also a renowned dance artist.
