Guwahati: As per Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) official, a total of 370 railway stations of the NFR region has been equipped with free Wi-fi activation in their premises. The facility of free Wi-fi in the railway stations is provided by the NFR as part of India's policy towards digitalisation. The official release stated that out of the total 370 railway stations empowered with the free facility, 213 are in Assam, 94 are in West Bengal, 35 are in Bihar, 20 are in Tripura, 3 are in Arunachal Pradesh, 2 in Nagaland and 1 each in Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram.

According to the NFR officials, passengers now can access "fast and free Wi-fi" in the assigned railway stations under NFR. Notably, the NFR controls railway operations in all 8 Northeastern states and 2 Eastern states (West Bengal and Bihar) of India. Recently in November, 2 railway stations of the region were provided with free Wi-fi by the authorities, thus making the new total 370.

It maybe mentioned that apart from important stations under NFR's jurisdiction, the majority of district and sub-division headquarters have now been provided with free Wi-Fi. The release from NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Subhanan Chanda further informed that passengers can now easily purchase their Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) tickets from these railway stations through Mobile Apps. They can also avail various other facilities or obtain information digitally and free of cost at these railway stations.

Initially, high-speed Wi-fi services were provided only at some railway stations through the collaboration of RailTel and Google. However, in later stages free Wi-fi was activated in the region's railway stations under Corporate Social Responsibility by M/s Tata Trust.

The news was made public yesterday by the official Facebook handle of Northeast Frontier Railway. The release mentioned that empowering railway stations with free Wi-fi will give India a great boost towards the Central government's vision of 'Digital India.'
