LAKHIMPUR: One of the prominent freedom fighters of the Lakhimpur district, Mohan Chandra Hazarika, is no more. He breathed his last on Saturday at Bihpuria Hospital, where he had been under treatment for old-age ailments. He was 98. He was the permanent resident of Sri Bhuyan village under Narayanpur Revenue Circle.
Born in Maluwal Gaon, under the present district of Majuli, in 1926, Hazarika later shifted to Sri Bhuyan in Lakhimpur district. He took part in the freedom movement with might and purpose. Especially, he shoulder the responsibility of the commander of the Borbali Anchalik Shanti Sena. At that time, he had been in close contact with several noted freedom fighters of the state, like ‘Koka’ Nilomoni Phukan, Rampoti Rajkhowa, Muhiram Hazarika, etc. Hazarika was also a social worker-organiser, progressive farmer, timber marchant, and efficient handicraft artist. He rendered admirable services as the president of Madhavdev Birthplace, Letekupukhuri Management Committee. He was also the president of the Kherajkhat High School Management and Development Committee, Sri Bhuyan Banikanta Yuva Sangha, Namghar Management Committee, and adviser of Madhavdev Moina Parijat, in addition to being involved with a number of religious and socio-cultural institutions in the greater Narayanpur area.
Lakhimpur district administration expressed profound grief at the demise of the freedom fighter and paid him the last homage. On behalf of the district administration, Narayanpur Revenue Circle Officer Hiromoni Mili, Lakhimpur Zila Parishad vice chairperson Rupa Pathak, and Lakhimpur Jila Mukti Joddha Sanmilani, along with a number of individuals, institutions, and organisations, paid him the last homage. He was cremated with state honour. He is survived by two sons and four daughters, along with a host of relatives.
