'Gandhi Jayanti' observed across Lakhimpur district

Gandhi Jayanti was observed across Lakhimpur district on Saturday by various organizations and institutions.

LAKHIMPUR: Gandhi Jayanti was observed across Lakhimpur district on Saturday by various organizations and institutions. On this occasion, a commemoration-cum-public meeting was organized by Lakhimpur District Congress Committee (LDCC) and the 75th Independence Day Celebration Committee at Rajiv Bhavan located in North Lakhimpur town. The agenda of the programme began with the lighting of ceremonial lamps and paying of floral tribute at the portrait of Gandhiji. The commemoration-cum-public meeting commenced with Gagan Chandra Borah, the president of the 75th Independence Day Celebration Committee. Former principal of Dhemaji College— Dr. Puspanath Borah, former LDCC president Kan Nath Phukan attended the programme as appointed speakers. In their lectures, both speakers highlighted the tremendous contribution of the 'Father of the Nation' towards the freedom movement and laid stress on taking his ideology of non-violence to the upcoming generations. Senior Congress leader Baparam Das, LDCC vice-president Padmeswar Pamegam, general secretaries Gangajyoti Tayegam and Dhan Mahammad, Mahila Congress president Hafija Begum and other dignitaries were present.

On the other hand, the Lions Club of Dhakuakhana organized a blood donation camp in Dhakuakhona in association with Chambers of Commerce. A total of 52 persons including a woman donated blood in the camp. By ringing the bell of Lion's Club, Sub-Divisional Medical Officer of Dhakuakhona— Dr. Pradip Mili inaugurated the blood donation camp while a prominent figure of Dhakuakhona— Kushal Gogoi attended the programme as special guest. The camp was held under the management of Dhakuakhona Blood Bank in-charge Dr. Jatindra Moran, Dr. Sukhma Narayan Rana Patir, health employees Jyotismrita Dutta, Kishor Buragohain, Monika Chiring, Tarun Gogoi and Jogeswar Gogoi.

Similarly, Lion's Club, Lakhimpur Pretona, the women wing of the organization, celebrated the event at the Rahdhala Anganwadi Centre in North Lakhimpur town among 40 children and their parents. The programme began with the lighting of lamps and devotional songs by secretary Jharna Ngate, Jotshna Medak and teacher Manju. Manjuri Baruah highlighted the activities of the Lions Club International and the noble ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi. The organization donated a water purifier to the Anganwadi Centre. A galaxy of prominent persons of North Lakhimpur were present in the programme.
