SIVASAGAR: A gang of seven notorious dacoits was apprehended by Sivasagar Police. The gang carried out a robbery at the residence of a businessman in Sivasagar town on the night of February 28. The gang was also allegdly involved in the murder of ASI Arun Chetia in Lakwa, Sivasagar in 2019, along with various cattle thieves.
The dacoits were identified as Baba Lahon of Moran; Samsul Ali of Japihojia, Demow; Ikram Ali alias Badang of Japihojia; Jalaluddin Ahmed of Japihojia; After Hussain of Japihojia; Nebul Hussain alias Pheti and Alif Khan of Dibrugarh. According to police, the gang robbed the house of a businessman in Sivasagar town on the night of February 28. The CCTV footage showed the gang of dacoits in front of the businessman's house with their mouths covered.
While hiding in a tea garden at Demow, a team of Sivasagar police led by Officer in-charge Jugal Kishore Kalita and Bishwa Duwari, apprehended the gang on Sunday. Illegal cattle trade had been going on for a long time in Upper Assam under the leadership of Ikram Ali alias Badang. Although Demow police succeeded to nab Ikram Ali a few days ago, the notorious dacoit was able to mysteriously escape from the chamber of the Officer in-charge of Demow Police Station.
On the other hand, Baba Lahan allegedly killed ASI Arun Chetia at Lakwa police station on March 21, 2019 and escaped from the police net. Sivasagar police finally managed to apprehend Baba Lahan, an accomplice of infamous car thief Bubu Konwar, who was allegedly killed in a police encounter.
