Gargaon College celebrates World Earth Day

World Earth Day was observed with great vigour by the Department of Geography, Gargaon College, in collaboration with Assam Science Society.

SIVASAGAR: World Earth Day was observed with great vigour by the Department of Geography, Gargaon College, in collaboration with Assam Science Society.

To mark the occasion, a popular talk on 'Earth Day Through the Lens of NEP 2020' was organized along with the inauguration of Geoinformatics laboratory at the Department of Geography, Gargaon College. The Geoinformatics laboratory was inaugurated by eminent academic and Principal of Gargaon College, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta. In his inaugural speech, Dr Mahanta spoke about the significance of celebrating World Earth Day and emphasized the preservation of biodiversity and conservation of ecosystem and the environment. He welcomed all the attendees and appreciated the endeavour of the Department of Geography, Gargaon College.

The popular talk was delivered by resource person Dr Bimal Barah, retired Principal, J B College (Autonomous), Jorhat. In his deliberation, Dr Barah highlighted the thrust areas of Earth Day such as generating awareness among the masses and encouraging people to become a part of the issue so as to provide impetus for positive action. He stated that there was cause of concern not just globally but also in the Indian context with challenges of public health, population growth, shortage of water etc. which can be improved only with good education and technological developments. He encouraged everyone present to follow the 3 R's - reduce, reuse and recycle- and stressed that Earth Day was not just a one-day event but a continuous effort. The programme was attended by around 200 students, teaching fraternity from various departments and staff of Gargaon College.
