Gargaon College observes World Wetland Day in Sivasagar

The department of Zoology, Gargaon College, in collaboration with Internal Quality Assurance Cell and NCC Unit of Gargaon College, organized a field visit to Hatihuria Beel

SIVASAGAR: The department of Zoology, Gargaon College, in collaboration with Internal Quality Assurance Cell and NCC Unit of Gargaon College, organized a field visit to Hatihuria Beel, Sukati Ali, Hahchara, Sivasagar to observe World Wetland Day with the theme, 'It's time for Wetland Restoration', on Thursday. The purpose behind organizing the programme was to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands locally known as beels, the need of its conservation and restoration to conserve the dwelling fish diversity.

Noted academician and Principal of Gargaon College, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, appreciated the effort of the organizers for organizing such an outreach programme for creating awareness for wetland conservation and restoration.

Dr Rina Handique, Vice Principal and Head of the Department of Zoology, Gargaon College initiated the programme and spoke on the importance of conservation and restoration of wetlands. She also advocated that these wetlands are home to a large number of native fishes having both ornamental and food values. She added that these wetlands provide breeding and nursery grounds for many rare fish species. She further urged for the need of the conservation of the wetlands.

Dr Surajit Saikia, IQAC Coordinator and Assistant Professor of Economics Department, highlighted the significance of observance of the day. Pimily Langthasa and Dr Anurag Protim Das, Assistant Professors of Zoology department, also spoke on the importance of conservation and restoration of wetlands. The programme was attended by around 150 students, including other faculty members of different departments of the college.
