GUWAHATI: With reference to a petition regarding a major hospital in Karimganj, the Gauhati High Court has directed the state Government to expedite the process. This ruling of the Gauhati High Court came last Thursday.

A division bench of the Gauhati High Court was hearing a petition filed by Hafizur Rahman Choudhury. This division bench consisted of Chief Justice RM Chhaya and Justice Soumitra Saikia. The petition was filed last year regarding the non completion of the proposed medical college and hospital in the Karimganj district of the state.

"We hope and trust that the state government will expedite the process of establishing the proposed medical college & hospital in Karimganj. From a communication of the state government it appears that they have already undertaken the process of identification of the land for the medical college," the judges noted.

The petitioner, Hafizur Rahman Choudhury mentioned that the state government is working in the field and establishing several institutions in different parts of the state, but no work is being done to complete the promised project in Karimganj. This has been a long time demand of the people of the Barak valley, but ample work has not been done towards its realization.

Advocate General of Assam, Devajit Saikia mentioned in front of the court that the state government is working towards setting up the necessary institution. He also conveyed that the new medical colleges are being set up across the state in a very phased manner. He also submitted a report with the 2022-23 budget of the state, wherein the provisions of setting up the medical college already exists. The identification of location and other necessary obligations are now in process.

The state government under Himanta Biswa Sarma is doing exemplary work in the field of health services across the state. Apart from setting up several new institutions in the past, existing institutions are also being upgraded to match the increasing needs of the people.
