Gauhati High Court Grants Bail To 14 Arrested For Posting 'Pro-Taliban' Posts On Social Media

The 14 persons were previously arrested in August for supporting the Taliban following the collapse of the Afghanistan government after the Taliban took over.

Guwahati: After being arrested for posting in support of the Taliban following the takeover of Afghanistan by the terrorist organisation, 14 persons have now been granted bail by the Gauhati High Court and sessions court.

In August, the Assam police had arrested 16 persons for posting 'pro-Taliban' posts on social media.

The Assam police booked all 16 of them under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

However, the court has granted bail to 14 of the accused in connection to the crime.

One of the accused has been identified as Saidul Haque, who was a constable of the Assam police. The first person to be granted bail by the Gauhati High Court was also Haque.

Two other accused identified as Khandakur Nur Alom and Saiyad Ahmed had been denied bail by the Dhubri sessions court.

In other news, the Central government has recently added 8 new judges to the Gauhati High Court. Advocates Kakheto Sema, Devashis Baruah, Arun Dev Choudhury and judicial officers Malasri Nandi, and Marli Vankung, have been appointed judges for the Gauhati High Court. The appointment of three additional judges in the Gauhati High Court was also notified by the Department of Justice. The names of the judges are Soumitra Saikia, Parthivjyoti Saikia, and S Hukato Swu.
