Guwahati : The Gauhati High Court has rejected the bail plea of the 5 accused in connection with the October 30th, 2008 Assam serial bomb blasts. Assam militant leader and the Chief of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) Ranjan Daimary, amongst the other accused, was the mastermind behind the serial bomb blasts that claimed over a hundred lives and injured over four hundred people. The bomb blasts took place in Guwahati, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, and Barpeta Road, totally shaking up the conscience of Assam to its very core.
Ranjan Daimary was sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment for his involvement in the Assam serial bomb blasts on January 30 last year. On January 24th, 2020, he was released from the Guwahati Central Jail for about a month to take part in the ongoing Peace Talks in New Delhi for the Bodo Accord. The Government then did not oppose his interim bail plea. It was a tripartite agreement which was signed in the presence of the then Honourable Home Minister of India Sri Amit Shah and Chief Minister of Assam Sri Sarbananda Sonowal by NDFB's top leaders of four factions and Satyendra Garg, the Joint Secretary in the Home Ministry and Assam Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna. This peace accord held huge significance as the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) formed under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution of India, was all set to hold elections the following April. The government similarly had released a few ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam) for taking part in peace talks.
Rebel leader Ranjan Daimary along with the other accused was convicted by a special court in the case of the serial bombings. Daimary and the other accused have now challenged the conviction order in the Gauhati High Court alongside applying for bail.
October 30, 2008, serial bomb blasts were one of the darkest chapters written in the history of Assam. It is now up to our judicial system to serve justice, which the people of Assam to this day await.
