Gauhati University NSS observes 72nd Van Mahotsav

PALASBARI: Gauhati University NSS Cell in association with NSS Units of Kokrajhar district organised a national webinar on "Tree Plantation & Its Impact on Socio-Economic Development" on Wednesday in connection with observance of 72nd Van Mahotsav from 1– 7 July.

During 'Van Mahotsav', the GU NSS Cell-taken initiative 'One Volunteer One Sapling" project among all 156 units and15,600 volunteers of all the colleges under GU which concluded on Wednesday.

Welcoming the participants, Dr Ranjan Kr. Kakati, DSW and PC, GUNSS Cell highlighted the benefits of plantation such as environmental, economic, social and community benefits. Inaugurating the webinar, chief guest and Vice Chancellor of GU, Prof. Pratap Jyoti

Handique said, "We have been celebrating Van Mahotsav since many years for rejuvenating our forest resources and we will be in danger without reforestation." Prof. Handique urged everyone for sustainable plantation and plant saplings that are suitable to the local climate.

Attending the webinar as resource person, Dimpi Bora, IFS, DFO, Social Forestry Division, Guwahati said that tree plantation not only provides fresh air but also has immense socio-economic benefits. She suggested for planting trees with economic values such as bamboo, agar, medicinal plants etc. so that the youths can take up some projects of entrepreneurship development.

Dipak Kumar RD, NSS, NER, Guwahati said that we can plant trees in empty spaces of schools and colleges for a green and eco-friendly environment. Hasmot Ali, NSS DNO, Kokrajhar District extended the vote of thanks. About 200 participants comprising NSS volunteers, programme officers and faculties of various States attended the webinar.
