Guwahati: Two officials of the Assam's Panchayat and Rural department have been arrested by the Dhubri government on the grounds of allegedly siphoning off the funds of the government that were meant for the development of rural areas of Dhubri district in Assam.

The total number of arrests in connection to this has gone up to four as of today.

On Sunday, the Dhubri police had arrested two engineers of the Block Development Office of Gauripur. The two has been identified as Saddam Hussain, the Block Development Officer and Abdullah Al-Masud Mollah, who worked as the accountant in the office. The duo was arrested from a remote location in West Bengal.

Allegedly, the BDO and the accountant had cleared bills amounting to Rs. 52.70 lakhs. A contractor, Jahidul Hoque, also known as the proprietor of Jahidul Enterprises, had been submitting fake bills to the department even when no work was done by him. An FIR was initially lodged against the three.

As per sources, the clearing of the bills was done without ascertaining any facts.

The investigations on this case started after the CEO of Dhubri Zila Parishad-cum-Project Director of DRDA of Dhubri, Animesh Talikdar submitted a written complaint on July 8. A regular case was registered and this led to the arrest of the BDO-accountant duo on Sunday in West Bengal.

The officer-in-charge of Dhubri Sadar Police Station, Partha Pratim Gogoi said, "In course of the investigation, the role of involvement in siphoning off the aforesaid amount by the concerned Block Development Officer (BDO) and accountant of the Gauripur Development Block appeared and the duo has been arrested accordingly."

However, the contractor, Jahidul Hoque, is still absconding. All efforts are being made to catch the contractor.
