GOALPARA: The Goalpara District Journalists Association (GDJA) on Friday staged a sit-in to protest against the alleged murder of Tinsukia journalist Parag Bhuyan.
The programme was carried out in front of the DC's office where more than hundred citizens from all walks of life participated. Nani Das, secretary of CPI (M), Goalpara district unit, demanded high-level inquiry into the incident. He lambasted the government for failure to provide security to working journalists in the State. "From Parag Das to Parag Bhuyan, the real culprits have not been arrested," he said.
Sailen Das, president of Goalpara district Red Cross Society, spoke about the law-and-order in the State. "Only few days back an on-duty police officer was manhandled inside a police station by a lady involved in politics. But no action was taken against her." Abdus Subhan, president of GDJA, demanded justice and adequate compensation to Parag Bhuyan's family. Pranab Das, president, and Roftarul Hoque, secretary of Goalpara Press Club, also staged sit-in.
Animul Hoque Choudhury, president of Goalpara district AAMSU, termed it as shameful that although the media was the fourth pillar of democracy, people had to protest every time against the injustice done to journalists. Bedanta Bhuyan, secretary of Goalpara district AASU, Aminul Hoque of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti and many others participated in the protest programme.
