Girish Chandra Sarma Shastri, a renowned Sanskrit scholar and a noted priest of Bajali died on April 25 at his residence at Bamunkuchi due to old age ailments. He was born on March 31, 1923 and his father was late Dhaneshwar Sarma and mother Urvashi Devi. He completed his early education from his village primary school in 1928. While he was in class six in 1936, he lost his father and mother in six months duration for which a struggle came to his life to stand with two sisters. However, with the help of his kin he passed matriculation in the year 1942 from Patacharkuchi Vidyapith. Then, instead of going to Guwahati with his good result for higher study, he got admitted in the Kamrup Sanskrit Tol of Patacharkuchi and from this institute he passed Adya and Madhama in Kavya. Then he began his career as a priest and later he completed Shastri in Vyakarana and Karmakanda. At this time, he got an offer and joined as Sanskrit teacher in April 1, 1966 in the newly established Patarcharkuchi Girls' High School and rendered services up to May 31, 1983. Then after retirement he fully devoted himself as a priest and earned vast experiences in Karmakanda. The people of entire Bajali and even from far came to him.
Girish Ch.Sarma Shastri was a hard worker. He always tried to develop the society. A book on his life history was released on his 90th birth anniversary named "Phool Chandan Tulashi". He published articles in newspapers and magazine in various subjects. He also wrote two books namely "Sri Sri Chandi Charit" and "Lakshmi Charit". He was felicitated by Patacharkuchi Sahitya Sabha during the golden jubilee celebration in October 2019 as a well-known educationist in Sanskrit.
He lost his two sons during the year 2017 and his wife just one year back. He is survived by his two sons, four daughters-in-law, two daughters and sons-in-law and a host of relatives. I pray to the almighty for the eternal peace of his departed soul.
